Microsoft is retiring the legacy ODBC driver for Dremio in Power BI and replacing it with Apache Arrow Database Connectivity (ADBC). This change affects Power BI Service first, Power BI Desktop and On-premises Data Gateway at a later stage (details below).
Dremio supports ADBC connectivity today.
Microsoft’s Power BI Change Timeline
The schedule below is communicated by Microsoft and is subject to change based on Microsoft’s changes in timeline. We will keep you informed of any updates as we receive them.
Late July, 2026 — Power BI Service
Power BI Service will switch all connections to ADBC by default. Power BI tenant admins can revert to ODBC if needed during this transition window.
Actions required:
- Dremio Cloud: no actions are required to migrate existing connections and reports. Power BI Service will automatically switch Existing ODBC connections to ADBC at the change date.
- Dremio Software: customers will need to migrate existing ODBC connections to ADBC before the applicable Microsoft deadlines to avoid disruption. Full instructions: Power BI with ADBC.
- Going forward, customers should create all new connections and reports using ADBC only. Dremio Cloud / Dremio Software
Late Q3 to early Q4 2026* — Power BI Service (ODBC Removed)
ODBC will be removed from Power BI Service, with ADBC becoming the sole connectivity option. The only way to continue using ODBC will be to route connections through the Power BI on-premises Data Gateway, which will require the customer to manually setup and maintain the driver.
Spring 2027* — Power BI Desktop and Gateway
This will be the last release that supports ODBC for Power BI Desktop and Gateway.
* Exact date not yet confirmed by Microsoft.
