*** Power BI Gateway May and June 2025 Issue ***
AFFECTED VERSIONS:
This issue is a continuation of the previous bulletin dated May 22, 2025, which detailed problems with Power BI Service, Power BI Desktop, and Power BI Gateway. The current issue specifically affects some customers utilizing Microsoft Power BI Gateway (May and June 2025 releases) on both Dremio Cloud and Dremio Software.
AFFECTED INTEGRATION:
MS PowerBI Gateway (May and June 2025 releases).
IMPACT:
This impacts existing reports that have been created through the Power BI connectors for Dremio Cloud or Dremio Software, where the last parameter is missing or null in the connection string (pre mid-2023).
Overview
The Microsoft Power BI Gateway May and June 2025 updates include a breaking change impacting connectivity to both Dremio Cloud and Dremio Software. Users might encounter connection issues during the update of the Power BI Gateway. The problem is not related to the Power BI Service or Power BI Desktop, where this issue has already been fixed.
What Changed
Power BI's Gateway May and June 2025 update modified how the Dremio connector handles null parameters in connection strings. The connector's DatabasesByServerV370 (Cloud) and DatabasesV370 (Software) functions now require specific parameter formatting that differs from previous versions.
Impact on Dremio Users
Who is Affected:
- Power BI Service users connecting to Dremio Cloud through the Power BI Gateway
- Power BI Service users connecting to Dremio Software through the Power BI Gateway
Symptoms:
- Error message: "We cannot convert the value null to type Record"
- Data refresh failures in Power BI Service
- Potential scheduled refresh failures in Power BI Service
Required Actions
Immediate Workaround
The customers should download and use the April release version of Power BI Gateway, which they could download with this link https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/data-integration/gateway/service-gateway-monthly-updates.This issue will be resolved in the upcoming July Power BI Gateway version.
What is NOT Affected
This issue does NOT impact:
- Dremio platform functionality or performance
- Data integrity or security
- Direct SQL connectivity to Dremio
- ODBC/JDBC connections
- Other BI tool integrations (Tableau, Looker, etc.)
